Am I upset about Autism?
Am I upset about Autism? Yes...and no. I would not change those wired this way for the world. I would change them for themselves. I guess that it is all about attitude. I teach. I teach kids all day every day. I have parents who profusely apologize for the way my coin has flipped when they discover that I am a parent of a child with Autism. "I'm so sorry" they say, while looking at me with a critical eye to see if they can detect the signs that I may have had something to do with it. "Why?" I respond. I love that my awesome 10 year-old loves Godzilla more than life itself. I don't really like hearing a complete listing of every single Godzilla character and their strengths in a loud monotone voice at 6am while I am watching the news with my coffee, trying to enter the real world. But...I do love the fact that he passionately desires to become the first 10 year-old private eye. I love that he has already written many comic books and can recite Calvin and Hobbes comics by heart...the whole book, mind you, if you let him, but he has a passion that many many other individuals lack. Life is about more for him. He sees the entire world in pictures, can memorize by seeing something once. Who knows? Autism may just be the next great evolution for the human brain, and all of us neural typicals may be missing the bigger picture. You never know. It could happen! That is why this blog is here. I am tired of parents who are only upset about Autism. It is another challenge, yes, but it is just another unique individual trying to make their mark on the world. So, this is my attempt to share some of the best things about living with an Autistic individual, and about teaching kids. Oh, did I mention that I may throw in my 2 cents about life as well?
